This year, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD) will be celebrating its 35th anniversary. Beginning as the Association for Non-White Concerns (ANWC) under the leadership of the late Samuel Johnson, the division has had a consistent presence in the discipline of counseling and psychology for over three decades. Providing a training ground for many of the foremost contemporary scholars in the field, AMCD has been an incubation organization for innovation in theory development, culturally sensitive training approaches, intervention frameworks, and assessment models. Counselors, such as Courtland Lee and Patricia Arredondo, have gone on to take the helm of the American Counseling Association while other scholars, such as Thomas Parham, Gargi Roysircar-Sodowsky, Victor Bibbins, Clemmie Solomon, Sherlon Brown, Bernal Baca, Roberto Aviles, and the late Roger Herring have made significant contributions to the field. It was fifteen years ago that the Multicultural Counseling Competencies (MCC) were unveiled. Today, the Multicultural Counseling Competencies guide mental health professionals and educators across multiple disciplines.

At the upcoming ACA conference in Hawaii, and throughout 2008, AMCD will sponsor events to celebrate its rich history. We invite counselors from all divisions to visit our website (http://www.amcdaca.org) for more information on upcoming activities. Additionally, signature items will be sold at the ACA conference, and later on the web site, to commemorate our anniversary and to acknowledge the impact of the MCC. Please stop by our booth at the exhibit hall to purchase exclusive AMCD anniversary products. Happy Birthday, AMCD!
