Dr. Daya & Mrs. Usha K. Sandhu Multicultural Counseling/Diversity Student Research Award

2008 Award Recipients

Michael Brubaker, Doctoral Alumni Fellow and Student, University of Florida
Nominated by: Dr. Michael Garrett and Dr. Andrea Dixon

Michael Brubaker's faculty nominators cite his strong leadership capabilities. Michael was selected as one of Chi Sigma Iota's International Fellows and Interns. He has exhibited leadership in the university, both in the doctoral program and as a University of Florida Graduate Student Council Representative, and in the community at large.

Mr. Brubaker spent seven years as a clinician and administrator with the Atlanta Union Mission, one of the largest providers to the homeless in the Southeast and has built bridges between his community work and his scholarship. He authored "The Pursuit of Recovery: A Pathway of Addiction Treatment Services for the Homeless," which was published in Addiction Professional Magazine. He has also presented at a number of national and regional counseling conferences on issues related to homelessness. Michael is a co-author of "The Medicine of Coming to Center: Use of Native American Centering Technique to Promote Cultural Responsiveness to Wellness and Healing in Group Work" (in press with the Journal for Specialists in Group Work) and "Crying for a Vision: The Native American Sweat Lodge Ceremony as a Therapeutic Technique" (currently under review).

Felicia Tripp, Master's in Counseling Program, San Francisco State University
Nominated by: Rebecca Toporek

Felicia Tripp's professors have stated that she is "committed to diversity through her very being." In addition to her course load, Felicia has voluntarily worked with Dr. Toporek on the development of a web-based multicultural social justice training tool. In this endeavor, she excelled in developing resources, investigating literature regarding multicultural training and technology, and working through the complexities of assessing multicultural and advocacy competencies online.

Felicia has been a co-presenter on topics related to the multicultural competencies and the advocacy competencies at national conferences. She also collaborated in a workshop on self-care in the journey to multicultural competence, which was presented at the California Counseling Association Conference. She is working on a project related to multicultural applications of narrative career counseling and has begun writing, presenting, and mentoring other students on this important topic. Felicia, as a multiracial student, has spoken out in classes in ways that have been described as "diplomatic", "very professional", and "educative and informative" regarding issues facing multiracial clients.
