2010 AMCD Service Day - Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development

2010 AMCD Service Day

We are excited to announce our plans for the 2nd AMCD Service Day Project. Currently, we are in need of a minimum of 40 volunteers with a significant number of males, and are hoping that you assist us in the recruitment process. What the Service Project Committee needs is 40 or more names and contact information (email address and phone number) for individuals who would like to participate with us in this effort. Our deadline for receipt of volunteers (and contact information) is Monday, January 25th, 2010. Please read the information below, which outlines the background and details of the Service Day event:

Dr. Daya Sandhu, AMCD president, charged the AMCD Service Day Project Committee (SDPC) to design the second AMCD Service Day. This service day will be held during the 2010 American Counseling Association Conference in Pittsburgh, PA. The goal of the service day will be to give back to the community by providing counseling services to Schumann Center Youth Detention Center (SCYDC) OR to provide counseling services to diverse adolescents at the Milliones Middle School, and Oliver High School

The Second AMCD Service Day is titled:

Tribute to Dr. Wyatt Kirk: Change Begins with Me! Shattering the Myths and Sharing the Realities.

The Service Day Project Committee is seeking volunteers. Our goal is to couple AMCD professionals/leaders with emerging professionals/graduate students to facilitate development of professional identity and provide a service to Pittsburgh's richly diverse and multicultural adolescents.

To volunteer for one of the programs, please immediately contact Ms. Tracee Perryman Stewart at tlperryman@gmail.com, or Mr. Randall Clark at randall.randycla@gmail.com.

For more information regarding the programs below, please immediately contact Dr. Sherlon Brown at 419.350.8421 or sbrown@bgsu.edu or Dr. Taunya Tinsley at tinsley@calu.edu

Note: Transportation will be provided.

Program Number One: Servicing Richly Diverse and Multicultural At-Risk Adolescent males and females.

What: A seven-hour program, including one-to-one mentoring, which is designed to encourage at-risk adolescents. Approximately 85% of young people are black, 80% are from the inner city. There are high rates of illiteracy and recidivism. Participants will identify plans for the achievement of future goals by addressing the following topics.

  • Emphasis on life skills (many of the young people are parents)
  • Reentry issues (becoming acclimating to the community at the time of your release)
  • Hygiene

Note: Volunteers for this program are required to provide a drivers license number, have a background check and jail north requires a comprehensive FBI background check. These background checks take about 3 weeks to complete; thus, we need to hear from you immediately and before February 15. There is the possibility that a dress code may exist for volunteers at the detention center site. For example, there may be specific guidelines regarding attire, facial hair, jewelry, etc.
